Prophet, king, and priest

As we have moved through the Lenten season toward Easter, we come to a Sunday that commemorates Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem (Palm Sunday). It is also a Sunday that the church has referred to as Passion Sunday, because it was on this Sunday that the church traditionally would make the sufferings of Jesus the focus of meditation and thought.

Our reading in Matthew focuses on the triumphal entry of Jesus in Jerusalem, but as this period of Jesus’ ministry is recorded in all four of the gospels, we find that He is even more clearly revealed as a Prophet, a King, and considering His purpose during these last days of His ministry, His mantle as High Priest is further affirmed.

This week we will touch on these titles of Jesus as we lead into Easter, the passion (suffering) of Christ, an incomparable act of love where Jesus endured an incomparable injustice unto death for us and the world (John 3:16).

Let us still our hearts and rest in the one to whom we look for salvation. To God be the glory.

Josh
